The Sound of Nature

Updated: Jan 18, 2021

Zzzz. Zzzz. Zzzzz.

Zzzz. Zzzz. Zzzzz.

I close my eyes and all I hear is the constant rattle that surrounds me. The air conditioning unit hums to my left but holds no stance as competition. This sound which must be heard far and wide begins to not only circle my physique but encircle my mind, stretching far beyond what meets my ear. After spending a few moments engulfed by the noise, now eager to learn its origins, I look to one of my many sources of information for the answer.

A presence of its own, this buzz has become somewhat of a reminder of what it means to live in suburbia. It has now grown beyond sound into action. A mating call I discover. A high pitched song belted out by male suitors for the attention of females, specifically of their own kind.

What a world we live in where I can listen to this mating call unabashedly and unbeknownst to me. A force for action repelling those unlike itself all amidst the heat of the day.
