What Motivates You?

Updated: Jan 18, 2021

Let’s take things back to the basics. Over 75 years ago, Abraham Maslow theorized a hierarchy of human needs. Discussed in his 1943 paper known as “A Theory of Human Motivation”, Maslow goes on to explain how humans have an intrinsic desire to fulfill personal needs. First, we seek fundamental satisfaction and then evolve onto the next level of need, moving from a primitive state to self-actualization.

This hierarchy, while it has transformed over the last 40 years, continues to find relevance and relatability in our current sociological era. Maslow noted since his theory’s inception that humans are capable of moving in a reciprocating motion, which means that although we've found contentment on one level of our lives we can bring our attention back to that space when those needs are deprived.

Now, allow yourself a moment to take each level in. Let it run through your mind and begin to permeate your thoughts. As you recognize each level’s uniqueness, begin to connect those individual levels with your life.

Evaluate yourself. Yes, it may feel uncomfortable analyzing but remember this exercise is utterly for you! The intention is simply self-reflection and growth! Two outcomes which surely derive from feeling uneasy, unsure or unsettled.

During that time of contemplation, consider: Do you find that your fundamental needs are satisfied? Are you able to look beyond safety and yearn for the idea of love and belonging? Maybe you feel secure in your relationships and are at a place of strength, seeking out respect and appreciation from those around you. Dare we say you may even taste a bit of self-actualization, living according to your fullest potential?

Well, wherever you find yourself on Maslow’s Hierarchy, it’s important to recall that this is just one of the many theories used to elicit an emotional response from us. We as humans are transient beings and forever growing, and with that, infinitely moving throughout our pyramid of needs.
